Day 1 Arrival in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Greeted at the airport and transported to Hotel Overnight in Hotel .
Day 2 Afternoon tour of Addis Ababa, including the National Archeological Museum and its display of the fossil remains of “Lucy” the 3.2 million year-old hominid discovered in eastern Ethiopia, the outdoor market (one of the largest in Africa), and a drive to Mount Entoto (altitude 3,200 meters) for a panoramic view of Addis Ababa. Overnight in HoteL.
Day 3 (190 miles; 6-7 hours) Depart Addis Ababa by minibus to Debre Libanos to visit one of Ethiopia’s largest and most venerated monasteries. Monastery was founded in 13th century by Saint Tekle Haimanot, but none of the original buildings exist today. There are two 20th century churches and several monastic schools. The road to Debre Markos passes through the 3,000 meter-deep Blue Nile Gorge. Along the road are endemic wild animals, particularly baboons and monkeys. Overnight in Hotel .
Day 4 (160 miles; 4-5 hours) Drive to Bahir Dar. City is on Lake Tana, Ethiopia’s largest lake. The Blue Nile flows out of Lake Tana. After lunch, drive 20 miles from Bahir Dar to view Blue Nile Falls, and return to city. Short excursion by boat to view the city from Lake Tana. Overnight in Hotel in Bahir Dar.
Day 5 (110 miles; 3-4 hours) Drive to Gonder. City was Ethiopia’s capital (late 17th century to early 19th century). Visit the imperial castles, the Debre Berhan Selassie church built during reign of Emperor Iyassu, 1682-1706, and the pool of King Fasilidis. Fasilidis was born in 1603, crowned Emperor in 1632, and died in 1667. Overnight in the Hotel in Gonder.
Day 6 (220 miles; 6-7 hours) Depart Gonder and drive through the western part of the Semien National Park and the Tekezze River Gorge to Aksum. Overnight in the Hotel in Aksum.
Day 7 View the stelae (large monolithic, pre-Christian memorials) and the underground tombs. Visit the new (mid-20th century) Church of St. Mary of Zion and the 17th century Church of St. Mary of Zion (believed to have been built on the site of the first Christian church in Ethiopia in the 4th century). Also visit the adjacent ecclesiastical museum. Outside of town are the recently-excavated ruins of a palace from the 3rd century BC. Overnight in the Hotel Aksum.
Day 8 (135 miles; 4-5 hours) Drive to Mekele. Shortly after leaving Aksum, pass by the site near Aduwa of the decisive victory in 1896 by Ethiopia over the Italian invaders from their colony in Eritrea. Between Aduwa and Mekele, stop at Yeha to view a temple built around 400 BC that was later converted to a Christian church. Overnight in the Hotel in Mekele.
Day 9 (180 miles; 6-7 hours) Drive to Lalibela. Overnight in Hotel Lalibela.
Day 10 View the dozen rock-hewn, monolithic churches built during the 12th and 13th centuries. They were begun during the reign of King Lalibela (1181-1221). The town was originally known as Roha, but the name was changed to Lalibela. Overnight Hotel in Lalibela.
Day 11 (180 miles; 6-7 hours) Drive to Dessie. Overnight Hotel in Dessie.
Day 12 (250 miles; 7-8 hours) Drive to Addis Ababa. we will have farewell dinner in one of the best Ethiopian traditional restaurant departing back home,
